Be emotionally intelligent

Lock down Story 5: Enock Jjumba

Enock Jjumba Sentongo is the co-founder of Economic Hub Uganda that focuses on youth policy research. He is passionate about economic consultancy, development research and training.

He is also an Economics Teacher and a policy advocacy fellow with Reignite Africa.

The lock down has had hard hitting effects and opportunities for my work, Enock says.

First,  I was unable to continue with my post graduate studies when schools closed, this disrupted my timeline and goals. Second , the nature of work both as a researcher and teacher is field based which meant that some projects had to either be postponed or cancelled which to some extent  affected my livelihood.

However, I have managed to adjust with the help of technology. Unlike in developed nations,  where upto 70 percent of the research can be digitally executed. It is not very easy here as many people are not digitally literate,  it has been a big lesson.

This period has been particularly important for me to reflect on my personal aspirations l have heard time to read and pursue online studies in behavioral economics. A field that is new and almost none existent in Uganda. It combines economics and psychology.

We need to embrace the changing nature of work. The crisis has revealed how the traditional work setting can be affected.  Above all is creating technological enabled spaces is key in organizations.

Saving is an important aspect not only for those in formal settings but for vulnerable informal workers. Financial dispcline is key. Keeping a personal budget, saving and stocking has been key for me. I can now scale to work and save up to fifteen thousand Uganda shillings.

Emotional intelligence has been my biggest take away. It has taught me about crisis management. remaining calm, having positive relationships and controlling anger. You alone are responsible for your own emotions , we are dangerous when we are not conscious of our responsibility for how we behave, think, and feel.”

I have also attended virtual meetings and completed tasks while working from home. It is possible as long as you have the right mindset, it all goes  back to your emotions. This been both a learning process and interesting experience for me.
