Stories of Us@ 2
Two years ago, our Foundation: Tell a Story Foundation was born.
We share stories of people that have walked the journey with us: Kitaka Alex facilitated a class way back in 2018 at Save Street Children Uganda. This is his story:
There is a child in us that remains.
There is a heartbeat that can’t be stained
There is a soul that won’t ever be chained.
That is always child like…
My experience with Tell a Story Foundation Uganda, begun with facilitating classes on reading and writing skills at Save Street Children Uganda.
This aimed at instilling a culture of story-telling in the children.
I learned that we have so much to learn from children and so do they need to learn from us.
They are not children just because they are vulnerable, neither is it because they are susceptible to very many ills in society. They are not children because they can not have access to basic needs or because they lack someone to put a smile on their faces, but also, and most importantly, they are children because they are CHILDREN.
This is the bridge that Tell a Story Foundation Uganda builds and calls upon each and every single one of us to change our mind set and treat children as children.
It is important to let children be aware that the future ahead is as bright as the sun every morning, and that they have the potential to become anybody they want to be at the end of the day.
My interaction with these children made me question seemingly childish questions, yet meticulous in their lives.
The laughter in their eyes speaking of a longing to learn and the engagement activities proving to create a sense of acceptance for them.
So my story begins, One Saturday evening, Tell A Story Foundation, at her maiden stage, invited me to facilitate a class of children.
First of all, I was excited; this has always been my department. Interacting with children, refilling their glasses of hope.
Rewiring their smiles and creating a safe space for them to share stories.
I carried with me class room tools, which included books, pencils, pens and pieces of papers to write on, and with that, the classes begun, and with that, the children explored the theme of storytelling and shared their dreams and hopes.
With that, every star in their innocent eyes, owns a space in the sky.
