Chase your passions
Meet Oroma Geoffrey, founder of Shanxo Music, a Performing Arts organization that provides flexible, accessible and affordable opportunities to people interested in learning, developing their talents and making careers out of their passion for Performing Arts.
1. How did this journey begin?
I was hooked to dance after seeing senior four students at a leavers party shake and break their bones to the rhythym of music as though there was no tommorow. I wanted to dance like them.
2. Did you meet any people that nurtured your passion for dancing at an early age?
Surely yes, when I was in my Advanced level of education, I met a vibrant youth dance group at Kyambogo College. They graced stage performances including church services with new moves that I did not know. I felt the urge to learn from them, so I joined them.
3. Did joining the dance group impact you in any way?
Definitely yes, I was inspired to start my own dance group in my form six vacation.
4. Can we say that all these experiences sparked the start of Shanxo music?
Yes, all event's are interconnected. By the time I was leaving campus, I did not only know how to dance but I was playing the guitar too.
I was already thinking of creating a live band with my friends to perform at functions and make some side money, that was the beginning of what we now call “Shanxo Music."
5. Walk us through the journey.
It has been eventful. After registering our company, we have been able to operate on a larger scale. We are now a sanctuary to people with a desire and passion for the Performing Arts. We started teaching the same skills we had learnt to others at affordable prices.
6. What is unique about your organization?
We believe we are the best alternative for family entertainment.
7. How have you helped young artists in love with Performing Arts?
We have taught them a number of skills like music production, singing, acting, and playing instruments which have enabled them to not only make a living through their talents but also availed them the opportunity to entertain guests at different social events.
8. What have you learnt from the students?
It is very important to invest in one’s talent because it is a door to new dreams, personal growth and the betterment of society.
Share with us some of the milestones you have achieved over the years?
Shanxo music started an academy in 2019 that has trained over 100 learners, provided side income to over 25 teachers and expanded our activities to neighbouring districts like Mukono, Wakiso and Entebbe.
I also created ArtVertising, an advertising agency and held our first Shanxo Live Concert in 2020 that attracted over 1000 viewers online.
6. What are your hopes and dreams?
We plan to introduce online teaching by 2023 so as to reach more learners, launch our mobile app by August 2022, acquire more equipment, monetize our annual musical concerts and build our own facility so as to scale up our activities.
7. Who benefits from your work?
Dancers, instrumentalists, singers, vocalists , actors, actresses and any one else with a passion for the performing arts.
8. What do you think should be done differently to make the art industry more sounding?
Creatives should be supported in making a living out of doing what they love. Being a performer should not be looked at as being a loser in life but rather seen as any other career like being a doctor, engineer and so much more.
When children say “when I grow up, I want to become a dancer," parents should be okay with it because its as good as any other career too.
10. Any advice to the listeners out there?
Start now, you do not have much time to think about starting.
Why we love this Story?
This Story is an epitome of young people that have gone of their way to embrace their talents and work so hard to bring their dreams to life.
We need more havens as this to remind us to chase the things in our lives that really matter.
