The Vertifarmer
Twesigye Duncan has been building vertical gardens for homes and office spaces for quite some time now.
You must be asking, what are vertical gardens? Well, we are tooππ. Let's journey together as Duncan unfolds.
Duncan, we are curious, what is vertical gardening?
Well, Vertical gardening is a kind of urban farming that involves growing plants on raised surfaces like walls. It works for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
What inspired you to venture into the vertical gardening business?
I had an inward conviction that I had to deal in vertical business so that all people including the lame can learn the art of gardening and fend for themselves too.
Did your childhood influence you in any way and how?
Surely yes, growing up in different homes under the tender arms of many of my relatives exposed me to an independent life at a very early age.
As a young child, I frequented Ibanda Hospital where I saw all sorts of sick people, I craved to be the solution, So as I matured, I grow fond of science, and I studied Biology.
3. Did anyone teach you this home gardening skill?
Not all, I am self-taught vertifarmer.
What was your breaking point in vertical gardening?
While at the campus, I was privileged to be a part of the climate challenge dubbed " earth hour"., with several innovators too. We had to pitch our ideas of how we're positively contributing to climate change. I saw this as an opportunity to push the vertical gardening dream more,
Walk us through your first vertical gardening experience?
It did not go well at all. There was a lot of chemical imbalance in the plants.
4. What is it about the young people that disturb you?
There is too much laziness in our generation, some young people do not want to read, and they can’t spend an hour doing research or investing in an online course, we are in a generation where the Google university is open 24 hours as long as you have a smartphone, It is sad that so many have not embraced it.
What does the future hold for Vertifarm?
Vertifarm envisions an academy training Ugandans about the importance of embracing controlled environment agriculture.
What gives you satisfaction as a vertical gardener?
Seeing a seedling become food that is put on people's tables.
Any advice to the young people
Opportunity will always be available, go for it, be diligent monitors of what God has entrusted you with, give it your best, and learn more, resources and money will never come to people who are not ready for them.
Why do we love this story?
The future belongs to those that dare to act, ordinary people like Duncan doing extraordinary things for the community. Through his Vertifarm initiative, Duncan is not only helping farmers maximize profits by utilizing small garden spaces but also teaching families to grow backyard gardens that provide everyday meals to them.
