Gentle Strides
Bridget Nalubwama is a social worker passionate about sustainable development. Her motivation is to put smiles on people's faces.
Through her nonprofit, Gentle Strides Uganda, Bridget is raising her voice to address the challenges young people face in fighting for their sexual reproductive health rights.
During one of my research projects at the university, I met young girls that we're unaware of their sexual rights, some were abused and married off at very tender ages. I too had faced similar challenges growing up, Luckily, I had acquired some knowledge from school which I wanted to pass on to young people. Bridget says.
I began by holding sensitization programs for both girls and boys in schools and rural communities, teaching the importance of knowing our sexual reproductive health rights, practicing good menstrual hygiene, and how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. The training has so far benefited 500 young people.
Bridget says some people have not yet embraced the need to talk about sexual reproductive health hence a hindrance to their work. "We keep moving", she says, and those we meet that are willing to collaborate with us, we gladly welcome them.
Some parents also deprive their children of the chance to return to school, especially the girls that get pregnant, this is not right and I do not second it. Girls should be allowed to go back to school even after giving birth.- Bridget re-assures.
It is very important to know your sexual reproductive health rights, Bridget says. Once you do, you are able you understand what is acceptable and what is not, you are also in a better position to make informed life choices and in cases of abuse, you can report to concerned parties.
To the Bridget's out there, " I hope that you can find your piece of motivation, even in the hardest times, so that together, we can make the world a better place"
