MakeUp for Impact
Yeyyyyyyy. We are back!!!! Happy New Year!!! Happy New Month!!!
We hope that the past two months have been bountiful for you, we have missed you .😔
It's March, and you know what that means; Stories for Women by Women. We can't wait to celebrate resilience, passion, power, and purpose.
On this Women's day, our spotlight is on the beautiful and bold; Achayo Kevin, a Ugandan social entrepreneur impacting women by offering them, free makeup classes through her Modusher Academy.
When the Covid 19 pandemic broke out, the government of Uganda pronounced a lockdown that had ripple effects on individuals and families.
I noticed many people lost their jobs and women greatly suffered from low self-esteem especially those that did not have any means of meeting their beauty needs, Kevin says.
Right with the women in my neighborhood, I started a free empowerment and self-esteem-building project through beautification/makeup.
Our first-class consisted of twelve amazing women and that's how the Modusher Academy began, adds Kevin.
Modusher is a combination of two words, "models and ushers". The first class was fruitful, it feels like yesterday, I have not looked back ever since, presently, I have impacted 300 women in different regions ie Makerere -kavule, hawala, Namugona, Naguru teens, and Padola youth forum, Kevin asserts.
I envision bigger strides this year, " going regional". I just completed a session with the beautiful women in Jinja -Eastern Uganda.
By the 15th of March, I will be starting another class with women from the deaf community, I am excited about this chapter, and she smiles.
Kevin says; her joy is in seeing ladies who have gone through her classes have the ability to do their makeup and make a living from the skill too.
Kevin hopes to train as many women as possible, however, she is constrained by a lack of a study avenue, in most cases, the training happens in backyards, these are open-air areas and the scorchy sun and heavy rains are a barrier to most study times.
She adds, we are overwhelmed by big numbers and our products are barely enough for everyone..one student has to wait for another one to finish their makeup session, we are delayed because time is unevenly spent, and before we know it, it's dark and classes have to end.
Since our make-up classes are free, with the available resources we have, we provide the women with start-up materials to kickstart their careers, most of them have no sources of income, however, we need more financial help to cater to the big numbers with the team inclusive as we travel for the regional outreaches.
Kevin says "Women's day is a very special day to me, I celebrate the beauty of being a woman and the strength of being a woman".
