The Storey Decor

Meet Victoria J. A Batyaliwawe, an enthusiastic and passionate creative contributor to the art space through her initiative, the Storey Decor.

Tell us about your childhood.

I was the quiet child who experimented with fire, drank kerosene, cut my dress to put a slit,  walked home because they didn't pick me up, and found out why we use cooking oil to fry food instead of water. This curious, creative,  daring, and experimental background led to the establishment of Storey Decor.

What is the Storey Decor?

This is a design and decor company that aims at engaging the community through art and design. We make decor accessories mostly by upcycling items and provide decor services for homes, offices, and events.

What inspired you to start The Storey Decor?

My love for the art of writing, reading, and listening to stories, as well as designing and decorating spaces most times in buildings that may have STOREYS( different levels 1,2,3...) provided the perfect recipe for StoreyDecor. To conserve the environment, I thought we should give new life/ meaning to old, discarded, and ignored materials by upcycling(different from recycling) them into decor accessories and art that can be enjoyed by the community. I  also relish how a space tells the story of the owner and so I help clients achieve that.

What significant impact has Storey Decor had on the community?

We transformed a school LIbrary from drab to fabulous. Vibrant blues, yellows, and reds, rugs, art on the walls, beautiful book displays, and comfortable bean bags to sit and bounce on made children want to be in the Library all the time.

Their reading and study habits improved. The Library became the hub of the school and the community loved and visited it regularly.
In our small way, by upcycling colorful old books,  catalogs, and magazines into greeting cards and wall art we have saved our community from pollution and environmental degradation.

What are some of the challenges you have faced in this journey?

Our decor accessories and products are hand-made. At times some people do not appreciate our art. Something we have hand-made with love and passion is at times undervalued yet time and effort were invested. That is a common challenge in the art industry.

Another thing is we still need money to invest and grow. We need to improve on the  finishing of our products but machines and necessary materials are costly

What piece of advice can you give to ladies that aspire to be like you?

Find your purpose because it will direct and make your life meaningful. Do a brain dump by writing down all the things that you enjoy doing. That one thing that is a common factor is your purpose. We all have a purpose but are derailed by so many things that take our time. Make sure your life revolves around your purpose and nothing else. Follow it. Live it. Enjoy it.

Speaking about purpose, what would you say yours Is?

My purpose is to create beautiful spaces that inspire, capture the essence and bring out the best in us. I believe great spaces are equal to a great life and we have lots of materials around us to make beautiful art.

What are your thoughts about Women's Day?

Women's Day is that one day in the year when women are applauded for their contribution to society. I think women are the pillars of society and should be applauded regularly by our governments, neighbors husbands, co-workers,  friends, and family.

Appreciation for who we are should be part of life. Nevertheless, it's great that there is an official day for women to be celebrated. There was a time when women were literally in the background of society.

Where can we find the Story Decor?

Connect with me on Facebook and Instagram as @storeydecor as well as on Youtube and LinkedIn as Victoria J.A Batyaliwawe.

Why do we love this story?

At the very confinement of her home in Seguku, Entebbe, Victoria is making the magic happen, and now more than ever, we believe that there is no excuse to chase after our dreams.
